In June 2006, Telford & Wrekin Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) successfully won a contract to deliver the Young Carers Service in the Telford area.

First located at Leegomery Community Centre, and then in Lightmoor for over 5 years, we are now based within the CVS offices at The Glebe Centre, Wellington, operating under a joint contract with our Adult Carers Centre colleagues, ensuring a smooth transition between Young and Adult carers provision.

We continue to build relationships with all the statutory and voluntary agencies, who refer a growing number of children and young people to us for support.  We also have a considerable number of self-referrals from families who become aware of what we do.  We are to date supporting over 450 young carers.

We carry on raising the profile of what young carers do and hope that by continuing to receive generous funding from private and public individuals and organisations we can extend support and respite in Telford, year on year.

Our Service history

Our experienced Key Support Worker team understand the issues that young carers have to deal with and are knowledgeable in assessing need, giving information and advice, confidential one-to-one sessions when needed. and liaising with other services on their behalf.   The young carer is the main focus of our provision.

Our Activities Coordinator organises all types of free age-appropriate activities, events and trips which are the hub of our provision, enabling trusting relationships to develop between support workers, volunteers and young carers and most importantly, to enable young carers to have fun, relax from their caring role, grow in life experience and self-confidence and make lasting friendships with others in the same situation as themselves.

Our Befriending & Activities Volunteer Coordinator recruits and trains our valuable volunteers who help both with activities and as Befrienders to individual young carers. See our volunteer pages for more details.
