In June 2006, Telford & Wrekin Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) successfully won a contract to deliver the Young Carers Service in the Telford area. First located at Leegomery Community Centre, we have been based in the new operational centre of CVS in Lightmoor, on the outskirts of Telford, for over 3 years.
We continue to build relationships with all the statutory and voluntary agencies, who refer a growing number of children and their families to us for support. We also have a considerable number of self-referrals from families who become aware of what we do. Referrals in 2009/10 were 77 including those from different social services teams, schools, health professionals, Connexions and 13 self-referrals. We are to date supporting over 200 children.
Our current and past Annual Reports tell our service success story in detail and our hopes for the future of the young carers of Telford supported by Telford and Wrekin Young Carers Service.
We carry on raising the profile of what young carers do and hope that by continuing to receive generous funding from private and public individuals and organisations we
can extend support and respite in Telford, year on year.
Our experienced Key Support Worker team understand the issues that young carers have to deal with and are knowledgeable in assessing need, giving information and advice, confidential one-to-one sessions when needed,
and liaising with other services on their behalf. The young carer is the main focus of our service, within an ethos of whole family support for those most in need.
Our Activities Co-ordinator organises all types of free age-appropriate activities, events and trips which are the hub
of our provision, enabling trusting relationships to develop between support workers, volunteers and young carers and most importantly, to enable young carers to have fun, relax from their caring role, grow in life experience and self-confidence and make lasting friendships with others in the same situation as themselves.
