Mentoring and Befriending
We are launching our new Mentoring & Befriending programme during 2011.
Our young carers who are most in need benefit from regular 1-to-1 support. With a befriender matched with those young carers who need one most, it releases our Key Support Workers to reach, assess and engage more young carers who need our support. By matching a young carer with a volunteer friend, who they will meet outside the home on a regular basis for as long as is needed, we hope to reduce their feelings of fatigue, loneliness and worry and improve their confidence, so they build more resilience in coping with their caring role.
By having fun taking part in new activities, talking over problems, and above all, having time just to sit and LISTEN, we are providing the type of support which many young carers always say they need - someone to be there just for them. The befriender will also support those young carers who might be in transition in education or employment, by helping them set informal goals to improve their opportunities, and move more towards meeting their aspirations.
Similarly, many 'cared fors' in the family home are often isolated and cut off from the local area where they live. Our volunteer befrienders will support them by visiting regularly, going out and about together if possible, getting involved in activities outside the home - trying to broaden perspectives and help them feel part of the community where they live.
